Input sought on proposed boat ramp at Mahukona

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a public hearing to gather community input on proposed small boat harbor improvements at Mahukona Beach Park in North Kohala.

The meeting will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Kamehameha Park Intergenerational Center in Kapaau.

Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will present an overview of the North Kohala Navigation Improvements Study and its options for constructing a new boat ramp and breakwater at Mahukona Beach Park. Costs, benefits and impacts of each alternative will be discussed. Park users, swimmers, boaters, community members and others are invited.

4-H Livestock Show and Auction planned in Waimea

The Hawaii County 4-H Livestock Show and Auction will be held Friday and Saturday at the Mealani Research Extension Station, 64-289 Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea.

Admission is free to all events. The show will be open from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The livestock auction begins at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Livestock projects will be on display at the 4-H Livestock Show where participants and their livestock will be judged.

Rabbit, poultry and goat projects will be shown on Friday with the rabbit show at 3 p.m., the poultry show at 3:30 p.m. and the goat show at 4 p.m. A small animal round robin showmanship class follows at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the lamb show starts at 8:30 a.m., followed by the hog show at 9:30 a.m. and the market steer and replacement heifer show at 11 a.m. The large animal round robin showmanship class begins 11:30 a.m.

Beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, 4-H youth offer their market livestock projects for sale at a live auction. Those who would like to support 4-H and the 4-H youth may register to bid at the auction or may pre-register by contacting Kaohinani Mokuhalii at 938-9040 or kmokuhalii@yahoo.com.

Three day keiki summer program planned at Hawaii Volcanoes

Keiki ages 8 to 13 years old are invited to become junior rangers through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s Keiki o Hawaii Nei summer program. The three-day program will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 24 through 26.

Keiki o Hawaii Nei is designed to encourage a child’s enthusiasm for discovery by connecting them with the park’s resources and staff and to inspire their appreciation of what is uniquely Hawaiian by exploring the natural and cultural heritage of Hawaii.

Participants must bring and be able to carry their own day pack with water, snacks, lunch and rain gear and hike up to three miles over uneven terrain at a leisurely pace. To reserve a space, call the Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at 985-7373 or email institute@fhvnp.org. The deadline to register is Friday.

Children will explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and visit the national parks on the west side of Hawaii Island. Transportation is provided and there is no cost to enroll.

Rotary networking event planned

Big Island Rotarians and their guests will meet for Rotary Means Business-Big Island from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the showroom at Humpy’s.

Rotary Means Business-Big Island is held on the third Thursday of each month for all Big Island Rotarians and their guests. The fellowship provides an opportunity for fellowship, networking and sharing about clubs and businesses.
